As long as recordings exist there has been cover composition.
In the beginning there was just graphical design of 'company' sleeves, but fairly soon the first picture sleeves occurred. And since that time pictures of the artist have become an undisputed standard. For collectors they are doubtlessly a valuable part of every set.
